Does Your Small Business Need Big Equipment?
By busQuest on Aug 8, 2008 in Business
There are many people who decide to start their own small business either out of their home office or out of a small leased office space. One of the questions that often comes up when launching this type of business is whether or not it is necessary to purchase the kind of big equipment that would be necessary if the business were to grow considerably in the first year.
For example, let’s say that you want to purchase a couple of paper shredders for the office. Do you need to look at commercial paper shredders like the big dahle paper shredders or GSA shredders? Or would it be sufficient to get a small paper shredder like the kind that you would purchase for use in your own home? The same question is going to come up for other equipment like printers and copiers and perhaps even phone systems.
The rule of thumb to follow is to predict what level of business you will have in one year and to buy the machinery that is appropriate for that prediction. You may find that you expect to need a high-quality commercial photocopier at that time but that you still won’t have enough confidential documents to justify the need for a commercial shredder.
