Many of us are discovering that we no longer need our old entertainment center furniture. The hefty television that we once owned has been replaced by a flat panel television that hangs on the wall. The video players that we once used have given way to watching movies via the Internet. There’s just no reason to have a bulky piece of furniture because there’s just not that much for it to hold anymore.

Before you drag that old home entertainment center to the dump, consider doing something creative with it. Here are a few ideas:

• Move it to the kitchen. If you have a big kitchen, this could be a place to store dishes or pantry items.
• Turn it into home office furniture. Your files, books and office supplies have to be stored somewhere.
• Break it down and build something else. A new table could come out of this creative approach.
• Gift it. A fresh coat of varnish could turn that furniture into something worth giving away at the holidays.

Before we trash anything, it’s important that we see if we can find a new purpose for it. This saves us money while allowing us to use our creativity. It also helps to save the earth by reducing what’s going in to the landfill.
