3 Things to Think about When Setting Up an Ecommerce Business

If you are thinking of setting up an ecommerce website, there are a few things you’ll need to consider, such as:

  1. How you’ll accept payment.  This can be tricky for many sellers, especially smaller sellers.  You’ll need to have a way to accept payment, and if you are a smaller site, you probably won’t sell enough to justify the high fees of many credit card payment services — not to mention people may be hesitant to give out their information to small sites without much of a reputation.  If you are selling something potentially expensive online — for instance, child ski wear — then it will definitely benefit you to look at options that are well know and will encourage buyers to trust you.  PayPal is the most well-known payment option for smaller merchants, but they also have something of a monopoly in the online payment industry and some people don’t like them because of that.
  2. How you’ll handle orders and customer information.  You’ll probably need to have some sort of system for keeping customer orders and information straight, lest you ship someone’s youth snowboard gear to someone whose kids ski rather than snowboard!
  3. How you’ll handle shipping.  You’ll probably want some kind of shopping cart system that will determine shipping for you, but you’ll need to choose one that offers the shipping options you want.  For instance, some children ski wear is pretty bulky and may require a big box, which can incur additional shipping charges, so be sure to take that into account when deciding on a shopping cart program!
