Fishing in Georgia

As my friend and I sifted through one Georgia fly fishing guide after another, we got more serious.  At first we were just looking for anything because we weren’t really sure what there was in Georgia.  But we read in several places that the “best bass fishing trip in the country” was in Georgia and that in general, we really had a lot of options.

Basically, it came down to trout or bass and river or lake.  My friend had never done a trout fishing trip on the river, so we went with that.  We had the option of doing conventional fishing on a guided float down the river.  We were intrigued by floating down the river, but concluded it might cut into our beer drinking, and we wanted fly-fishing more than the conventional fishing.

The only hitch was that we would not be able to do an overnight trip.  We couldn’t find any cabins with availability (apparently everybody wants to go fishing in 90 degree weather with around 100% humidity-who knew?), and there was no way we were going to camp after three or four days of nonstop driving through the South in the Summer in a 1990 Ford Bronco with no air conditioning.

We settled on getting a cheap hotel in the closest town, and waking up at daybreak to drive to the river.  It wouldn’t be ideal, but we’d still have all day to drink, fish and BBQ.  Good enough!
